INTRODUCTION

Michael D. Gillespie is Dean of Student Success and Professor of Sociology at Eastern Illinois University. Dr. Gillespie has previously served as the Director of the Faculty Development and Innovation Center .

Dr. G. leads a division spanning academic advising, student support services, accessibility, testing, interdisciplinary studies, and first-year experience programs. His approach is equal parts scholar and practitioner — grounded in research, accountable to evidence, and stubbornly focused on outcomes that actually move the needle for students.

A first-generation college graduate, Dr. G holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. In Sociology from Western Michigan University.

His work experience includes Gillespie Research, LLC, a social service program evaluation and assessment consulting business, and over 18 years in higher education classroom.

At EIU, he has led initiatives in advising reform, basic needs coordination, at-promise student advocacy and programming, and the launch of the First-Gen Hub. He believes the best student success work is built on listening — to focus groups, to retention data, to DFW rates, and to the student sitting across the desk who is one bad week away from stopping out. He is, by his own admission, a data nerd who also cries at graduation. He would not have it any other way.

Working with a diverse group of students and faculty who have their own biography, struggles, and passions is inspiring.  When these worlds collide, as Carl Sagan writes, ‘something incredible is waiting to be known’.

"I am hopeful, not out of mere stubbornness, but out of an existential concrete imperative" ~Paulo Freire
