Required Training for Researchers, Instructors, Students, and Staff Conducting Research:

All faculty, staff, and research students whose duties involve significant contact with animals must read the Health and Safety for Animal Researchers document (link below), and retain it for furute reference. Once the document is read, complete the Certification of Receipt and Understanding (link below) and submit it to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

Required Training for Students in a Course in which Animals will be Handled:

Students who handle animals only to meet the requirements of a course, without receiving research credit, will receive relevant training from the instructor of the course. It is the responsibility of the instructor to ensure that all training requirements have been met. There are two required components of the training:

2. Training in occupational health and safety

Proof of completion of training must be documented.

This training requirement may be met in one of three ways at the discretion of the instructor, and will be indicated by submitting the Student Training for Instructional Protocols form.

1. Students may complete the on-line course “Working with the IACUC” at the . The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will verify CITI training for all students enrolled in the course. The instructor is responsible for ensuring all students take the training. Additional courses listed in CITI can be assigned at the discretion of the instructor, but are not required. 

2. Students may read the document: “Use of Animals in Courses: What You Need to Know.”  These instructions may also be incorporated into a course syllabus or lab manual. The document may be modified and tailored to fit the needs of the course at the discretion of the instructor. The course syllabus should explicitly mention the training as part of course requirements, and questions about the material should be included on at least one quiz or exam. Documentation of this training option will consist of the instructor submitting a course syllabus and a copy of the training document, if modified, to ORSP.

3. Students may be trained by a method of the instructor’s choice, provided the essentials of proper handling of animals (according to The Guide for the Use and Care of Laboratory Animals) are conveyed. Documentation of this training option will consist of the instructor submitting a written description of the training and a course syllabus to ORSP.

Students should read “Health and Safety for Students Handling Animals.” These instructions may also be incorporated into a course syllabus or lab manual.
